Church Closure Update - August 2026

Closure of St. James’ Church, Wigmore
From Saturday 1st August the church of St. James’, Wigmore will close as a place of regular worship.
What does this mean?
From that date, no baptism, wedding or funeral service can be conducted in Wigmore. No "regular" religious services will be conducted. The “local” parish church for parishioners in Wigmore will become Aymestrey.
Dispensation has been given to the Friends of St. James’ for us to continue with our activities and events in the church building. We will retain keys for the building to open and close it each day and continue to welcome visitors, whether they are tourists or locals. We will continue with a plan of scheduled events and will continue to welcome visiting bell ringers.
A condition of the Diocese’s insurance for the church to continue to be “open” in the sense above is that six religious services of some kind are conducted each year. Initial thoughts are that these will include Easter, Harvest, Remembrance and Christmas but that is yet to be confirmed.
In due course the appropriate church authorities will publish a more formal statement than this but I thought I would pass on the news
